This occurred back in May 2015 on the
cruise from Hawaii to San Diego after a ten month deployment. DDGs
Sterett (my ship), Gridley, Dewey, the CG Bunker Hill and the CVN Carl
Vinson all raced as a sort of fun demonstration for the family and
friends we had embarked on the five day cruise from the island to the
mainland. (Sterett won)
The plane circling above, if I remember correctly, is one of several P3s the carrier launched to show off to the civilians.
The top speed of a DDG is 30+knots, which as you can see causes just a little wind.
