This App Can Solve Handwritten Math Problems

Anyone who has ever stared anxiously at a knotty equation in need of a solution has wished for some kind of ax to cut through the problem. Mathpix, the “first app that can solve math by simply taking pictures of your handwriting” may present that long-needed tool.
Lead developer Nicolas Jimenez posted a demo on Vimeo of Mathpix going through its paces. Users open the app, activating the phone’s camera. When held over a wide variety of problems, the app highlights them in green—as the iPhone does when redeeming an iTunes card via camera, for example—then sends them to a server for solutions.
“The process of entering math on a computer is painful and I wanted to find a better way,” Jimenez told Motherboard in an email.
He first began working on Mathpix while a math Ph.D. student at Stanford, he said.

"The process of entering math on a computer is painful and I wanted to find a better way."

Jimenez said the Mathpix team teaches “powerful deep learning algorithms to read math by feeding them large amounts of training data,” and the app’s “algorithms get smarter over time as we get data from users.”

Mathpix is used by high school students for algebra and graphing, and calculus students use it "primarily for solving integrals, for which we provide step by step solutions," Jimenez said.
It’s easy to assume math teachers and professors might be pretty wary of students having such a potentially powerful app at their disposal, but publisher-provided info indicated that Mathpix “also shows you step-by-step solutions to tricky problems, guiding you to the solution with simple, effective instructions.”
Instructors might be more likely to ask students to download the app as a valuable teaching tool, once they’re clear on its functions. The engineers and programmers behind the venerable old graphing calculator—still sold, still in use today, yes—may be the ones who need to worry about this kind of innovation.

Twitter insider: Calm down, your feed isn't about to be taken over by robots

Twrr098adf
The Twitter community went into a virtual hyperventilating freakout on Friday when reports surfaced that the company might be planning on changing the way tweets are displayed (from reverse chronological to algorithmic).
But if one major, frequently outspoken Twitter activist investor is to be believed, there's nothing to worry about.
SEE ALSO: Death of Twitter is trending on Twitter as users freak out over algorithm
Early Twitter investor Chris Sacca, who claims he has no inside information, took to the messaging platform to say that there is "zero percent chance Twitter eliminates the chronological feed."
Sacca was also careful to add that he doesn't work at the company. However, those familiar with his tweets, which sometimes presage major moves at Twitter, are likely to take Sacca's word as a relatively authoritative source on the topic.
Although it's not unusual for Sacca to speak out publicly on all things Twitter, it's particularly understandable that he'd carve out a couple of minutes on a Saturday to address the issue considering Friday's backlash.
Once reports began surfacing that Twitter might change the way tweets are read to an algorithmic system, like Facebook's, the outrage on Twitter was swift and passionate.
So many users, high profile and devoted fans alike, spoke out against the change that a new hashtag is now trending worldwide: #RIPTwitter.
But those concerns may be premature.
In a related mini-tweet storm, Twitter iOS engineer Brandon Carpenter responded to the rumor-fueled backlash by attempting to calm everyone's nerves.
Unfortunately for Carpenter, Twitter users weren't in the mood to be talked down from the social media ledge, and quickly descended upon him with a raft of unflattering tweets responding to his original message.
The experience appears to have opened Carpenter's eyes a bit more to the oft-mentioned problem of harassment on Twitter. But mean tweets aside, what Sacca's and Carpenter's Twitter messages add up to is that 1. no matter how many times someone tells you Twitter is on the decline, it still has a passionate user base that cares about its future and 2. those rumors about algorithmic changes may have just been rumors. Or not.
Either way, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey is now on notice from his users: If you are toying with algorithms on the Twitter timeline, don't expect a long list of favorites to come your way. The tweeple have already spoken.

If You Like Taylor Swift's Music, You Might Enjoy These Books

Personalization algorithms are often helpful, but not without fail — buy a gift for a friend on Amazon and suddenly you feel like a stranger in your own account.
Qloo is an iOS app launched in November that believes better recommendations come from being more holistic. You add favorites across eight categories (movies, books, travel destinations, restaurants, etc.), each with subcategories, and the app makes cross-category recommendations. You can't have more than five favorites per subcategory — an attempt to keep the app's data high-quality. Your taste in music will influence your recommendations for brunch, and so on, creating a sort of Frankenstein monster of Foursquare, Netflix, Amazon and more.

InVision Raises $11.6M From FirstMark Capital And Tiger Global

InVision, a prototyping tool for thousands of web developers and designers, has recently closed an $11.6 million Series A round from FirstMark Capital and Tiger Global.
The company launched in 2011 out of New York with a mission to make it easy for designers to share, interact with, and get feedback on their prototypes. Users can easily upload Photoshop files to the web and add interactions to form a simulation, all within a normal web browser under a single link (which can be password protected).
In February 2012, InVision raised a $1.5 million seed round with FirstMark. The startup has since focused on facilitating the conversation around these prototypes, which can now happen with a much wider range of people.
Founder Clark Valberg explained that traditionally, the communication between designers and coders about the final look and feel of a project was limited to an inner circle of people. With InVision, a wide range of people across the company can consult on the design and give their feedback asynchronously.
That might sound like data overflow, but one might also consider it a less risky alternative to launching a real product before the design department is ready. That is, after all, the argument. Some startups believe that design, in multiple drafts, should come before coding out the product, while others believe that you should push a real product out as quickly as possible to get users (and ultimately receive their feedback).
projects_screen

Valberg isn’t opposed to iterating based on user feedback, but believes that it’s better to get much of that initial iteration process out of the way before you “lose a lot of control” by making your product publicly available.
The new funding will allow InVision to continue picking up new customers, which currently range from small startups to huge corporations. The company is also working on “some interesting partnerships”, as well as some enhanced marketing and new features.

Challenge Your Favorite Athletes to Video Game Battles With OverDog

Overdog
Tackling NFL running back Adrian Peterson in real life might sound like a pipe dream, but you just might be able to take down the actual Minneapolis Vikings star in a game of Madden.
That’s the concept behind new gaming platform OverDog, which connects major athletes across the NFL, MLB, NHL, WWE and other leagues with fans through console-based video games. That’s right: Peterson is just sitting on the couch waiting to play you in a round of Call of Duty

“The name OverDog – which is a play on ‘underdog’ – lets any sports fan tackle Adrian Peterson, dunk on Roy Hibbert or race against a NASCAR driver... and win,” said co-founder and former Chicago Bears player Hunter Hillenmeyer. “That's not possible in the real world, so we’re leveling the playing field for a new kind of competition.”
The startup launched in April around the concept that athletes can challenge to fans to video games supported by PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
"There are countless services that try to connect fans with their favorite athletes in ways that feel a lot more like work than fun — like waiting in an autograph line — but the beauty of OverDog is that we're making that same connection possible in a way that's fun for everyone," Hilenmeyer said. "Athletes are already playing tons of video games, so we are just providing them with the tools to play those games with fans."
After downloading the OverDog app for iOS or Android, users program their favorite games, console of choice and set up time periods — such as 6:00 p.m. to midnight – when they might be most up for a challenge. When an athlete is in the mood to play, app users who fit the bill are put into a lottery system and sent a push notification that a specific athlete wants in on a game.

OverDog
Those who are selected are then placed into a real-time match. Some games such as Call of Duty: Ghosts can take on five players at once.
Following eight years in the NFL and serving on the NFL Players Association for five, Hilenmeyer is relying on his personal network of athlete relationships to get the platform underway. The majority of the 310 involved athletes stem from the NFL (60%) and range from modern greats such as Marshawn Lynch and Calvin Johnson to icons like Randy Moss and Ray Rice.
OverDog
“By and large, our athletes love first-person shooters like Call of Duty, Halo and Battlefield and sports games such as Madden, FIFA and NBA2K,” Hillenmeyer said. “We have some guys who play PC games, but they are the exception. Right now our most active gamers are MLS guys and MLB guys, mostly because it’s their offseason.”
NFL athletes tend to play OverDog on Mondays and Tuesdays, which are often off days, Hillenmeyer added.

Gaining Traction

From a business model standpoint, OverDog is still small, but its network of athletes has tremendous reach.
“The tie in to their social streams is a very important part of the allure for brands who are trying to get in front of sports fans in a less pitchy way,” Hillenmeyer said.
“Most of these guys are super passionate about gaming, so our job is really just to try not to get in the way.”
“Most of these guys are super passionate about gaming, so our job is really just to try not to get in the way.”Athletes typically get paid in swag, which includes free gear from sponsors, free games, early access to games and headphones.
“When we pay athletes real money, its usually because they are doing something more than just playing video games. That means scheduling a game, letting us record it, or creating content we use in some promotional capacity.”
From there, a brand – most likely a video game publisher or one that wants to specifically target sports fans – can use that athlete’s reach in an organic way. Call of Duty: Ghosts — which launched in November — was OverDog’s first official sponsor

Couple App Now Lets You Stalk Your Partner On Mobile And Desktop

Fans of monogamy should get excited.
Couple, the social network for two, has just launched a relatively major update that integrates location data in a totally new way, making sure you can always keep tabs on your partner.
And if tracking your sweetie via mobile just isn’t enough control, Couple is also launching a web app for the very first time, enabling users to check out their moments, lists, and chat on the desktop.
In terms of location, Couple has added a Live Beacon feature. This allows you to broadcast your location to your partner, which automatically deactivates after 30 minutes. Founder Oleg Kostour explained that he wanted it to be easy for couples to find each other, but he didn’t want an always-on location function to scare away younger, less committed couples from using the app.
After updating, current users should notice that the location action is now centered on the first page, prioritizing it over some other actions like thumbkiss and live sketch.
Meanwhile, Couple has added in foursquare integration which lets users explore restaurants and other places nearby which they can suggest to their partner. Eventually, Kostour promised that partners will be able to create and share lists for their suggested places to go to be saved in a history for later reference.
He also explained why the company is moving into the desktop space after spending almost two years as a mobile only company.
“No matter how important mobile is, we can’t forget that most people are spending eight hours a day at work, in front of a computer,” said Kostour. And the logic makes sense.
That said, Couple now offers a lighter version of the app for the web, which includes chat and a way to browse through your moments. According to the company, it’s a first step toward a full-featured, native desktop app.
Couple launched out of Y-Combinator in 2012 as Pair, and renamed to Couple at the beginning of this year. Users have sent over 1 billion messages through the app.

Gift Guide: A Few Of Our Favorite Things

Friends, the moments are ticking away and it won’t be long at all before your tranquil living rooms turn into wrapping paper-strewn war zones. What’s that? You haven’t done your shopping yet?

Well, we’ve decided to take a quick break from our more thematic gift guides and give you the straight dope on the gadgets and gifts that just make our lives a little better. Read on for a glimpse of what really tickles our fancies, warms our cockles, and drains our bank accounts.

John Biggs:

time-it-t-block

Time-it T-Block Full Black Watch

$190
Nerdy watches are my kind of thing and the Time-it T-Block is the nerdiest. At less than $200 it’s a great looking watch with a nice retro-Information Society feel. The watch shows the time by lighting up a series of bright red LEDs and the case and band make one fluid whole. If you’re dressing like Neo at all this year, this is probably the watch for you. It also comes with a blue and yellow band, but I think black is best.
udoo

Udoo Raspberry Pi/Arduino Mashup

$99
Shopping for a tinkerer? The Udoo Raspberry Pi/Arduino board is just right. It runs its own version of Linux and can directly control a set of dedicated digital and analog I/O ports. It’s a great experimental platform and allows you to add some very cool real-world interactivity to your Raspberry Pi projects. It’s not quite for the faint of heart but it’s amazing fun when you get it started up and you start blinking LEDs with reckless abandon.
treb1_large

The Trebuchette

$39.95
Go to war against your cubicle mates with the Trebuchette, a working, desk-based trebuchet designed to crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their electric pencil sharpeners. The DIY kit is made of wood and comes with all the pieces you need to lay siege to Pam-alot.

Matt Burns:

Parrot-AR.Drone-2.0-bis

Parrot A.R.Drone 2.0

$299
At worst, the Parrot A.R.Drone 2.0 is a fantastic toy. At best, it’s a device that will show the masses the appeal of drones. The Parrot A.R.Drone is a fully-capable drone, able to reach incredible heights and speeds and it’s controlled by just a smartphone. There is a learning curve and it’s definitely an outdoor toy. Still, after 30 minutes of wobbling around the yard, you’ll have the drone soaring like as if controlled by Skynet. It’s a fantastic gift for you or your kin.
gearpower
IOGEAR GearPower
$20-$50
There are countless mobile battery solutions on the market. But I have yet to find one as bulletproof and affordable as the IOGEAR GearPower. It’s dead simple: two USB outputs, recharges by microUSB and sports just one button that kicks on the power and displays the remaining battery capacity.
Best of all, this battery is often dirt cheap on Amazon and comes in various sizes. The 11,000 mAh flavor can sometimes be had for as low as $28.99 on Amazon while the 7,000 and 2,400 variations are also priced relatively low. It’s a boring gift, sure, but a gift that will surely be used by anyone addicted to their smartphone.
fitbit-force-9to5mac-new

FitBit Force

$129
I’ve tried nearly every smart device on the market, but the FitBit Force is the only one I still use. It’s the perfect size. The battery lasts over a week and it functions beautifully as a simple watch. My expanding waistline is testament to the fact that simply wearing a health tracker will not cause you to lose weight. However, since the Force is much more than a connected pedometer, it’s managed to work its way into my life as something I wear 24/7.

Darrell Etherington:

kindle-paperwhite

Kindle Paperwhite

$119
Amazon makes a mighty fine e-reader, and that hasn’t changed even as it started pouring more resources into its Android-based tablets. These kids with their Alanis Morissette and their TurboGrafx 16s might be okay with reading books on backlit LCD displays, but I’ll stick with e-paper like God intended, thank you very much. The latest generation is a refinement on last year’s model, but it does manage to truly refine things in every way that matters.
anker-hub

Anker USB 3.0 7+2 Port Hub

$44.99
USB hubs are possibly the least sexy gift you can get someone, but also the most useful. This one by Anker has been a stalwart, with two dedicated charging ports that offer both 2.1A and 1.5A 5V charging to power up your iPad and your iPhone or Android device at maximum speed. Little lights indicate what ports are currently in use so you can tell if you have defective or undetected equipment, and the design is actually not offensive or garish, which is rare in these things.
philips_hue_starter_pack_iphone

Philips Hue

$199.95
Call me a weirdo but I really like these lights, and will slowly blanket my entire house with them as budget allows and as Philips continues to introduce new models that are compatible with all my various sockets. Heck, I’d use one in my oven if it was rated for that. If I have a complaint, it’s that the app maybe isn’t as good as it could be, but Philips just updated its software for iOS 7 and it no longer requires you to turn your phone into landscape orientation to change the color/tone of your bulbs.

Chris Velazco:

3ds-xl

Nintendo 3DS XL

$199
I know, I know: mobile gaming is the new frontier and there’s no shortage of gadgets out there that can turn your smartphone into something approaching a real gaming console. Call me an anorak, but until we start seeing seriously top-tier franchises earnestly migrate over to mobile I’m more than happy to tote around a separate device meant solely for catching Pokémon or navigating the wilds of Hyrule.
photojojo

PhotoJojo Smartphone Lens Sampler

$49.99
You can throw as many filters and effects on a photo as you want, it’s no substitute for a bit of shaped glass that sits in front of your lens. There’s no shortage of these little things floating around out in the e-commerce ether but I’m particularly fond of the ones from PhotoJojo — I’d much rather have a magnetic ring sitting around my phone’s lens for the rest of its days than, say, a hefty clip sticking of the end of it.

calipers
Digital Calipers

$16.99
Easily the curveball of the group. I originally bought one of these for use with phone reviews until I realized that they just weren’t all that necessary to the process… so I started measuring other things instead. And by other things, I mean everything. Seriously, I think I have a problem.

Smartphone App Uses Selfies to Check Your Cholesterol Level

AppA team of engineers has designed a smartphone accessory and app that allows users to monitor their own blood cholesterol levels. Think of it as a sort of cholesterol selfie — or maybe a healthie?
As researchers from Cornell University explain in a paper in the journal Lab on a Chip, all you need — aside from their attachment and a smartphone — is a reagent test strip and a willingness to draw your own blood. Cholesterol tests tend to rely on reagent strips that turn different colors, depending on the cholesterol levels of the blood placed on them. The researchers’ achievement was to design an attachment to be placed over the smartphone flash and camera that can illuminate and capture the color of the strip, rendering unnecessary specialized equipment or an in-person health professional. The lab is working on a smartphone app that can determine vitamin D levels, too.
The technology is relatively straightforward, and the research group is one of many developing smartphone tools such as these. Already, apps can turn smartphones into heart-rate monitors, sleep monitors or ultrasound machines, to name just a few. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, half of the more than 3.4 billion smartphone and tablet users worldwide will have downloaded mobile health applications by 2018.
Whether they use them regularly is another question. Still, the continuing spread of smartphones globally and the determination of health policymakers to drive down costs make such cheap, idiot-proof (at least, idiot-resistant) technologies all-but inevitable

Apple Announces Top iPhone, iPad Apps of 2013

App_store-1Finishing the year atop Apple's App Store list has never been more competitive. The company announced in October that the App Store features more than one million apps that have combined for more than 60 billion total app downloads.
So, what does it take to reach the top? Apparently lots and lots of candy.
Candy Crush Saga was a star for iOS users in 2013, taking the top spot as the most downloaded free app on both iPhone and iPad this year. The addicting game was also the top grossing app on both iPhone and iPad, an impressive feat considering the app is free and relies on in-app purchases for revenue.
Candy Crush officially earned its crown Monday when Apple released its annual list of the top downloaded apps. The company does not break out specific download figures, but it did reveal a "Top 10" list for multiple categories, including top paid iPhone and iPad apps. Minecraft - Pocket Edition took the top spot on both devices in the paid app category.
Examining the lists for both devices gives a slightly better picture of how users are engaging with iPhones and iPads. Social media sites, for example, were some of the most downloaded apps on iPhone, but only one, Facebook, even cracked the top 10 on iPad.
Twitter, the company behind the year's most highly anticipated tech IPO, did not appear in the Top 10 on any list. Vine, the video sharing app Twitter unveiled in January, was #4 on the Free iPhone Apps list.
Snapchat, the photo-sharing app that automatically deletes images and videos after a recipient views them, was downloaded more times than Facebook and Instagram.
Based on the lists below, it appears as if iPads are primarily used for game playing — and gambling. Five of the top 10 highest grossing apps on the iPad in 2013 were gambling-related, including DoubleDown CasinoBig Fish Casino, and Slotomania HD; the other five were games.
Last year's most popular free apps for iPhone and iPad — YouTube and Skype for iPad, respectively — were both in the top five again this year.
Here's a look at the apps that kept us glued to our iOS devices in 2013.
